Modigliani

I love this guy's work. These paintings, while wonderfully stylized and unique, never were made so in an attempt to deliberately unsettle the viewer. But their curious eeriness is in the slight exaggerations in their forms. This is a good example of how so often exaggeration and caricature is the vehicle for the grotesque. Being so unaware and even confident of their own grotesque presence, the subjects, through their cool, dead gazes, can be especially intimidating to the viewer.
